2.2.2Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The motherboard comes with a surface mount LGA2011 socket designed for the 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processor Family for the LGA 2011 Socket.

Ensure that all power cables are unplugged before installing the CPU.

Upon purchase of the motherboard, ensure that the PnP cap is on the socket and the socket contacts are not bent. Contact your retailer immediately if the PnP cap is missing, or if you see any damage to the PnP cap/socket contacts/motherboard components. ASUS will shoulder the cost of repair only if the damage is shipment/ transit-related.

Keep the cap after installing the motherboard. ASUS will process Return Merchandise

Authorization (RMA) requests only if the motherboard comes with the cap on the

LGA2011 socket.

The product warranty does not cover damage to the socket contacts resulting from incorrect CPU installation/removal, or misplacement/loss/incorrect removal of the PnP cap.

2-4

Chapter 2: Hardware information

2.2.3System memory

The motherboard comes with four Double Data Rate 3 (DDR3) Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMM) slots.

A DDR3 module is notched differently from a DDR or DDR2 module. DO NOT install a DDR or DDR2 memory module to the DDR3 slot.

Recommended memory configurations

Chapter 2

ROG RAMPAGE IV EXTREME

2-5

Memory configurations

You may install 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB unbuffered and non ECC DDR3 DIMMs into the DIMM sockets.

2 Chapter

You may install varying memory sizes in Channel A, Channel B, Channel C and Channel D. The system maps the total size of the lower-sized channel for the dualchannel, triple-channel and quad-channel configuration. Any excess memory from the higher-sized channel is then mapped for single-channel operation.

Due to CPU behavior, DDR3 2200/2000/1800 MHz memory module will run at DDR3 2133/1866/1600 MHz frequency as default.

According to Intel® spec, the max. 64GB memory capacity can be supported with DIMMs of 8GB (or above). ASUS will update QVL once the DIMMs are available on the market.

According to Intel CPU spec, DIMM voltage below 1.65V is recommended to protect the CPU.

Always install DIMMs with the same CAS latency. For optimum compatibility, we recommend that you obtain memory modules from the same vendor.

Due to the memory address limitation on 32-bit Windows OS, when you install 4GB or more memory on the motherboard, the actual usable memory for the OS can be about 3GB or less. For effective use of memory, we recommend that you do any of the following:

Use a maximum of 3GB system memory if you are using a 32-bit Windows OS.

Install a 64-bit Windows OS when you want to install 4GB or more on the motherboard.

For more details, refer to the Microsoft® support site at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605/en-us.

This motherboard does not support DIMMs made up of 512Mb (64MB) chips or less (Memory chip capacity counts in Megabit, 8 Megabit/Mb = 1 Megabyte/MB).

The default memory operation frequency is dependent on its Serial Presence Detect (SPD), which is the standard way of accessing information from a memory module. Under the default state, some memory modules for overclocking may operate at a lower frequency than the vendor-marked value. To operate at the vendor-marked or at a higher frequency, refer to section 3.3 Extreme Tweaker menu for manual memory frequency adjustment.

For system stability, use a more efficient memory cooling system to support a full memory load (8 DIMMs) or overclocking condition.

2.2.5Onboard switches

Onboard switches allow you to fine-tune performance when working on a bare or opencase system. This is ideal for overclockers and gamers who continually change settings to enhance system performance.

1.Power-on switch

Press the power-on switch to wake/power up the system.

2 Chapter

2.Reset switch

Press the reset switch to reboot the system.

2-18

Chapter 2: Hardware information

3.GO button

Press the GO button before POST to enable MemOK! or press it to quickly load the preset profile (GO_Button file) for temporary overclocking when in OS.

Chapter 2

4.BIOS button

The motherboard comes with two BIOS. Press the BIOS button to switch BIOS and load different BIOS settings. The nearby BIOS LEDs indicate the BIOS you are using.

ROG RAMPAGE IV EXTREME

5.PCIe x16 Lane switch

These slide switches allows you to enable and disable the corresponding PCIe x16 slots. When one of the installed PCIe x16 cards is out of order, you can use the slide switch to find out the faulty one without removing the cards.

2 Chapter

6.Q reset button

When the LN2_Mode jumper does not work and your CPU cannot resume function, press the Q reset button to temporarily stop the power supply to the CPU and help the

CPU recover from a frozen condition.

2-20

Chapter 2: Hardware information

7.Slow Mode Switch

Slow Mode Switch is employed during LN2 benching. Some processors have a small optimum temperature range to run at their highest frequency. Warmer or colder yields instability at this frequency. For example, a certain processor may need -80̊C loaded in order to run 5.8GHz, which means about -75̊C idle in order to stay stable at 5.8GHz.

Going colder or warmer crashes. It will however remain stable at slower frequencies at much colder or warmer temperatures. Once it comes out of a heavy load while transitioning over to a light load, when the temperature does not warm fast enough, it may crash. To over-come this simply flip the switch over to “slow” the processor instantaneously. Switching over to Slow-Mode during critical moments when Temperature/Max Frequency alignment is off-synch saves you a lot of crashes, even when trying to boot into the OS at cold temperatures.

2.2.6Onboard LEDs

The motherboard comes with a set of LEDs that indicate the voltage conditions of CPU, memory, northbridge and southbridge. You may adjust the voltages in BIOS. There are also an LED for hard disk drive activity and an onboard switch for power status. For more information about voltage adjustment, refer to 3.3 Extreme Tweaker menu.

1.Voltiminder LED II

Voltiminder LED II provides not only many measurement spots for various voltages but LEDs indicating which voltage is being polled. This is especially useful when debugging overclock failures. Voltiminder LED II consists of the following LED set:

GND, CPU_VCORE, CPU_VSA, CPU_VTT, PCH_1.1V, PCH_1.5V, DRAM_AB, and

DRAM_CD. For example, when you fail to post and see the LED for CPU_VTT light up, the system is alerting you that the setting for CPU VTT should be readjusted.

2 Chapter

2-22

Chapter 2: Hardware information

2.Hard Disk LED

The hard disk LED is designed to indicate the hard disk activity. It blinks when data is being written into or read from the hard disk drive. The LED does not light up when there is no hard disk drive connected to the motherboard or when the hard disk drive does not function.

Chapter 2

3.BIOS LED

The BIOS LEDs help indicate the BIOS activity. Press the BIOS button to switch between BIOS1 and BIOS2 and the LED lights up when the corresponding BIOS is in use.

ROG RAMPAGE IV EXTREME

2-23

4.GO LED

Blinking: Indicates that MemOK! is enabled before POST.

Lighting: Indicates that the system loads the preset profile (GO_Button file) for temporary overclocking when in OS.

2 Chapter

5.Q LED

Q LEDs check key components (CPU, DRAM, VGA card, and booting devices) in sequence during motherboard booting process. If an error is found , the corresponding LED will continue lighting until the problem is solved. This user-friendly design provides an intuitional way to locate the root problem within a second.

2-24

Chapter 2: Hardware information

6.Power LED

The motherboard comes with a power-on switch that lights up to indicate that the system is ON, in sleep mode, or in soft off mode. This is a reminder that you should shut down the system and unplug the power cable before removing or plugging in any motherboard component. The illustration below shows the location of the onboard power-on switch.

Chapter 2

7.Debug LEDs

The Debug LED design provides you the 2-digit display, allowing you to know the system status. Refer to the Debug table below for details.
