    Turning off the Printer To turn off the printer, press the POWER button. When the POWER lamp stops blinking, the printer is turned off. About the Power Plug When removing the power plug after turing off the printer, be sure to check that the POWER lamp is not lit.

    Using the Auto Sheet Feeder and the Cassette You can load paper in both the Auto Sheet Feeder and Cassette. Loading paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder is easy, and is convenient if you frequently switch to and print on various sizes or types of paper. Loading paper in the Cassette allows you to print without reloading paper for each job.

    Basic Printing • Continuous printing on the same type/size of paper by using both the Auto Sheet Feeder and Cassette together If the Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette runs out of paper, the paper source automatically switches to the other one. This is useful for printing onto a large volume of paper. To use this feature, you need to configure the printer driver beforehand.

    Loading Plain Paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder For detailed information on the specialty media Canon provides for use with its various printers, refer to See “Printing Media” in the how to load specialty media into the printer. Flatten the four corners of the paper before loading it.

    You can use general copy paper or Canon’s Super White Paper. You can load up to 150 sheets of plain paper (64 gsm or 17 lb, 13 mm or 0.52 inches in height) in the Auto Sheet Feeder. However, do not stack more than 50 sheets in the Paper Output Tray.

    Loading Envelopes Use either European DL or US Comm. Env. #10 size envelopes. The address is rotated automatically to match the direction of the envelope when printing.     Basic Printing Adjust the size of the Cassette. When loading A5- or larger sized paper (nonstandard-size paper: 203 mm / 8 inches or more in length), extend the Cassette. When loading 5″ x 7″- or smaller sized paper (nonstandard-size paper: less than 203 mm/ 8 inches in length), do not extend the Cassette.

    Open the printer properties dialog box. (1) Select Print from the application software’s File menu. The Print dialog box opens. Specify the required settings. For a detailed description of the Paper Source settings, refer to the Driver Guide When you select the print mode appropriate to your document from Print Mode, the document will be printed in color and at a print quality suited to the characteristics of the Media Type you have selected.

    Press the RESUME/CANCEL button while printing. Printing is canceled and paper is fed out. You can also cancel a print job by clicking Cancel Printing on the Canon IJ Status Monitor. To display the Canon IJ Status Monitor, click Canon iP5200 on the taskbar.

    The Printer List opens. Double-click the printer name displayed in the Name list. The iP5200 dialog box opens. Select the desired document, then click Delete icon. To temporality stop a job in progress, click Pause. To cancel all the jobs in the list, click Stop Printing.

    It is possible to specify which images to print and various print settings from the operation panel of your camera or mobile phone. Canon Bubble Jet Direct allows you to print photos from a Canon Bubble Jet Direct compatible (PictBridge incompatible) digital camera or digital video camcorder without a computer, by simply connecting the digital camera or digital camcorder to this printer.

    Do not connect any equipment other than PictBridge compliant devices or Canon Bubble Jet Direct compatible digital camera to the Direct Print Port of the printer. If you do so, electric shock, fire, or damage to the device could result.

    Advanced Printing Connect the PictBridge compliant device to the printer. Depending on the model or brand of your device, you may have to select a print mode compliant with PictBridge before connecting the device. You may also have to turn on the device or select Play mode manually after connecting the device to the printer.

    If any setting cannot be made, the default setting explained above is used. Names of settings that are displayed on Canon PictBridge compliant device are used in the description given below. Different names may be displayed on your device depending on the brand or model.

    Printing Maintenance Replacing Ink Tanks When an ink tank runs out of ink, replace it using the following steps. Ensure that the printer is on, and then open the Paper Output Tray. Push the Open Button above the Paper Output Tray. The Paper Output Tray automatically opens.

    Prepare a replacement tank. (1) Unpack the new ink tank and completely pull off the orange tape. Then, remove the film completely. (2) Remove the orange protective cap from the bottom of the ink tank and discard it. Be sure to remove the clear film from the ink tank in the exact order shown in step 4-(1), as failure to follow this step may cause the ink to leak and stain your clothes and hands.

Follow the procedures below to clean the nozzles. If the ruled lines are shifted after running the print head maintenance, align the Print Head.

    Printing Maintenance Aligning the Print Head This operation must be carried out when using the printer for the first time. Aligning the Print Head positions allows you to print without shifts in the color registration. Print head alignment is performed either automatically or manually. This section deals with automatic Print Head alignment only.

    It takes about four minutes to complete printing. Do not open the Top Cover while printing. Clicking Check Setting prints the current settings and finishes the print head alignment.     Before the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, contact the Customer Care Center. (You will need to replace a particular part of the printer.) Canon recommends that you call for service as soon as this error occurs. Once the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, printing cannot be performed until the Waste ink tank is replaced.

    An ink tank that was once empty is installed. Replace the ink tank. Printing under the situation may damage the Print Head. Canon shall not be liable for any printer malfunction or damage caused by refilled ink tanks. If you want to continue printing with the refilled ink tank installed, press and hold the RESUME/CANCEL button for at least 5 seconds, and then release it.

Unpack the Printer

Carefully remove all items from the box.

Remove the tape from the printer.

Prepare the Printer

Before turning on the printer, open the top
cover and remove the protective material and
tape from the printer as shown. The tape
position is subject to change.

CAUTION:

Be sure to remove the protective

material before you turn on the printer.

Close the top cover. Plug the power cord into
the back of the printer and connect the other
end to a power outlet. Press the POWER
button. The printer will initialize. Wait until the
POWER lamp displays a steady green light.

Open the front cover. Raise the top cover.
Lower the inner cover.

NOTE:

Push the open button above the front

cover. The front cover automatically opens.

The print head holder automatically moves to
the center. Write down the serial number
located inside the printer. You will need this to
register your products.

IMPORTANT: 

If the top cover is left open for

more than 10 minutes, the print head holder
moves to the right. Close and reopen the top
cover to return the holder to the center.

Install the Print Head

Remove the print head from its package.

CAUTION:

There might be some transparent or

light blue ink on the inside of the bag the print
head comes in — this has no effect on print
quality. Be careful not to get ink on yourself
when handling these items.

Remove the orange protective cap from the
print head.

· Do not touch the print head nozzles and the

electrical contacts.

· Do not attempt to reattach the protective cap once

it has been removed.

Firmly raise the print head lock lever.

Slide the print head into the holder. 
The print head will rest at a slight angle.

Lower the print head lock lever carefully and
press it down.

Install the Ink Tanks

Peel back the orange tab completely and
remove the plastic wrapper from the Cyan Ink
Tank (CLI-8C).

Twist off and discard the orange protective cap
located on the bottom of the ink tank.

IMPORTANT:

Do not touch the electrical

contacts.

NOTE:

· To avoid spilling ink, never press on the sides of

an ink tank.

· Do not touch the open ink port once the protective

cap is removed, as this may prevent the ink from
being ejected properly.

Insert the ink tank into the rightmost slot. 

Press the 

mark on the ink tank until it clicks

into place and then its lamp lights red.

Insert the remaining four ink tanks into their
assigned slots. Ensure that ink tank lamps light
red.

Close (a) the inner cover and then (b) the top
cover. Lift open the paper support and extend
the paper output tray.

IMPORTANT:

Be sure to close the inner cover

completely, or the paper will not feed properly.

NOTE:

· The printer will perform a print head cleaning. Wait

until the POWER lamp displays a steady green
light before proceeding.

· If the ALARM lamp still flashes orange even after

the printer has stopped making operating noises,
an ink tank may not be installed properly. Open
the top cover and make sure that the ink tanks are
installed in the correct order directed on the label.

Connect the Printer
and Load Paper 

IMPORTANT:

Be sure the printer is off before

continuing, or the computer will attempt to
install the printer driver before the printer is
ready.

TURN THE PRINTER OFF.

Connect one end of the USB cable to the
computer, the other to the appropriate USB
port on the printer.

NOTE:

The iP5200 Photo Printer is equipped

with USB 2.0 Hi-Speed port. If your PC does not
support USB 2.0 Hi-Speed, or if any non-
certified USB 2.0 cable or driver is used for the
connection, the printer will operate at a lower
speed provided under USB 1.1.

Pinch the paper guide and slide it to the left.
Load a few sheets of blank paper into the auto
sheet feeder, align the paper with the cover
guide, then slide the paper guide toward the
left edge of the paper.

IMPORTANT:

Print Head Alignment (Step 6)

requires that letter size paper is loaded in the
Auto Sheet Feeder (top paper feeder).

    Preface Introduction Thank you for purchasing a Canon Inkjet Printer. This Setup Guide uses the following symbols to indicate important information. Always observe the instructions indicated by these symbols. Instructions that, if ignored, could result in death or serious personal injury caused by incorrect operation of the equipment.

    Set Up the Printer and the Computer. ® ® (for Windows see page 18, for Macintosh see page 32) Install the driver to use the printer and the software to connect it to a network. Setup complete The printer is now ready for use.

    LAN cable, the printer connection method becomes wired LAN. • We recommend that you do not use the printer over a wired and wireless LAN at the same time since advanced network knowledge is required.

  • Page 7: Connecting Over Wireless Lan Via An Access Point

    Your computer communicates with the printer via an access point (the infrastructure mode). To share the printer among multiple computers, connect them to the access point. • When using this printer in a wireless LAN setup, use the infrastructure mode. It does not support the ad-hoc mode.

    A hub and LAN cable are required to connect this printer to a wired LAN. These must be purchased separately. The type of device in use in your network may vary. Refer to the manual of your device or contact its manufacturer for details.

    A computer communicates directly with the printer with a USB cable, while other computers are connected over a wireless LAN (infrastructure mode). You can exploit this configuration by setting up the printer over either a USB connection first, or over a wireless connection first.

    You need to perform setup both on the computer to be used with USB connection and on the computers to be used over wired LAN. We recommend that you do not use the printer over a wired and wireless LAN at the same time since advanced network knowledge is required.

    • Always push the plug all the way into the power outlet. If you do not intend to use the printer for a long period of time, unplug the power cord from the power outlet after turning off the printer.

    Check the labels to make sure that each tank is in the correct position. Ensure that all the ink tanks are installed in the order directed by the label. The printer cannot be used unless all the ink tanks are installed. Put back the Inner Cover and close the Top Cover.

    • Close any open software applications including anti-virus, computer security and other software. If using over a USB connection, preparation is now complete.     A firewall is a system that prevents unauthorized access to a local network from the outside. When setting up the printer for a use over a network, disable the firewall of your security software during the setup.     Confirming Settings of your Access Point When setting up the printer to be used over wireless LAN, the printer’s network settings are configured to match those of the access point.
