Building Instructions Preview
It has never been easier to build a complete Great Ball Contraption (GBC) loop yourself! The GBC 44 Scoop Loupe features a nifty scoping motion which lifts 2 GBC Balls at a time. The GBC can be used as a self contained loop or participate in a GBC layout. Using a more accessible LEGO Set and focusing on one single mechanism this GBC is by far one of the best GBCs to get started.
This GBC is entirely built using only parts from the LEGO Heavy Duty Excavator and can be referred to as model C of the 42121. This GBC makes sure you master the GBC building techniques and tricks so that you eventually also can build your own GBCs. By default the whole machine is powered by hand but it can easily be upgraded with any LEGO motor (more information in the building instructions).
Take your Scoop under the Loupe
When looking at the GBC 44 Scoop Loupe it is directly clear that all the fuzz is about the scooping shovel which can take 2 GBC balls at once. A complex combination of gearing and linkages deliver a beautiful motion which is mesmerizing to the eye. The shovel and the timings mechanism work in perfect sync to make sure that the GBC Balls are dropped in time to fill the shovel. Almost no gear left untouched to get the correct gear ratio needed, even using the big turntable part as a gear. Nice part usage for sure! Once the GBC Balls are lifted they can spin in the optional GBC Funnel Turbo Spin (Left version) and roll down back to the input of the GBC via the return path. While building you will learn about gearing, linkages, mechanisms, synchronization, sturdy construction and so much more.
Fun Fact
As a follow up on the “easy to approach beginner” Conveyor Belt (known as GBC 43 Rocking Raiser), we wanted to experiment with the unique shovel part from the set. After many tries we came up with a fluent shovel motion which is very satisfying to watch. Don’t you agree?

Power & Automate
Unfortunately LEGO set 42121 doesn’t include a LEGO motor. For that reason, the GBC 44 Scoop Loupe is by default powered by hand. However we designed pre-designed motor mounts so you can easily upgrade the GBC 44 Scoop Loupe with any of the LEGO Motors available and make it go on it’s own.

If you don’t have the required LEGO set there is still a chance you can build our models by using parts you already have. Most technic models use a lot of the same and/or replaceable parts.
When watching the video and checking upon the building instructions you can easily see which parts can be replaced if you desire so.
What cool color designs can you come up with?!
Optionally you can also directly import the part list to Rebrickable. Some warnings may pop up during importing due to part/color number inconsistencies between databases. Most of the time these are not to worry about and Rebrickable will give you a nice overview of it.

Background
Excavators are heavy construction equipment consisting of a boom, dipper (or stick), bucket and cab on a rotating platform known as the «house». The house sits atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. They are a natural progression from the steam shovels and often mistakenly called power shovels.[citation needed] All movement and functions of a hydraulic excavator are accomplished through the use of hydraulic fluid, with hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors. Due to the linear actuation of hydraulic cylinders, their mode of operation is fundamentally different from cable-operated excavators which use winches and steel ropes to accomplish the movements.
