Chapter 5 SIP Service Configuration
This chapter introduces the configuration methods and steps of SIP service data through command lines. After reading the chapter, you will be able to perform SIP service configuration.
For the command lines and basic configuration, see ¡°Chapter 3 Basic Commands¡±.
5.1 Introduction to SIP
Brief introduction to Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) will help you understand SIP service well.
I. Functions
SIP is an application layer protocol which is used to set up, change or end multimedia session.
Based on text coding, SIP uses the protocols such as HTTP and SMTP for reference. SIP can work with the protocols such as RTP/RTCP, SDP, RTSP and DNS to perform the services such as Voice, Video, Data, E-mail, Presence, Chat and Game.
Through SIP protocol, IAD can realize the interworking of Internet and PSTN/ISDN network, the telephone services between POTS users over Internet and the call connection between POTS users and Internet telephone users.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
5-2
II. Features
l Minimum state: A conference call or telephone call may contain one or multiple requests. The proxy server can work in stateless mode.
l Content encapsulation: The SIP message body can carry any content; SIP protocol layer can use UDP protocol or TCP protocol. UDP protocol is the first choice.
l Transparency: The network devices in-between such as Proxy need not to understand the content of SIP message and can process the SIP message transparently.
III. SIP Network Model
SIP Network Model is shown in the figure below.

l UA: The entities that initiate requests or calls. For example, SIP Phone and SoftPhone.
l Proxy: Forward the requests or responses of clients.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
5-3
l Redirect Server: Map the addresses in users’ call requests into new addresses and return the new addresses to users.
l Register Server: The server that receives registration requests. For example SoftSwitch devices.
IV. Call Procedure
The SIP call procedure is basically the same with that of ordinary telephone call.
After startup, users register user information in Register Server. After registration is done, VoIP telephone services can be available.

2) Change the IP address of the MGC to 1.1.1.2, but do not use write. Use display initial-config. The result shows that the IP address is 1.1.1.1. Use display current-config. The result shows that the IP address is 1.1.1.2.
3) Use write, and then use display initial-config and display current-config. The results show that the IP address of the MGC is 1.1.1.2.
The above shows that:
1) When the IAD starts, initial-config is the same as the current-config.
2) After you change data and use write, initial-config is the same as the current-config.

6.4 Alarm Management
Alarm management includes alarm record, alarm setting, alarm statistics of the IAD.
The IAD can be maintained through alarm management, so as to ensure its normal operation.
After an alarm occurs, the system will broadcast it to each terminal according to the conditions of the maintenance terminals currently configured, mainly including NMS workstation and command line terminal.
Whether to report the alarm to each terminal is defined in the alarm control.
6.4.1 Description of Common Alarm Attributes
I. Alarm ID
A certain type of alarms refers to all the alarms of the same type (with the same alarm ID).
Alarms of the same type are identified by a unique alarm ID of four bytes, like 0x********.
You can input the complete alarm ID like 0x********, or input it in decimal form.
The value of an alarm ID ranges from 38 to 1507589.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary

II. Alarm level
Alarm level indicates the severity of an alarm, which can be critical, major, minor or warning.
l Critical alarm refers to the alarms for the faults which can affect the normal operation of the device, and the user is required to mend the faults immediately. Such as faults of power supply or circuits.
l Major alarm refers to board alarms or line alarms. If the user does not handle the fault in time, normal operation of services will be affected. Such as fault of a physical line.
l Minor alarm refers to the fault alarms and event alarms describing the working status of each board or line. For example, bit error occurs in a certain physical line.
l Warning alarm refers to a change of status, or an event, that does not affect the normal service of the device, but may be of interest to the maintenance and operation person. The recovery prompt of the device is also a warning.
III. Alarm class
There are three alarm classes:
l Event l Fault l Restore
IV. Alarm type
The alarms of the IAD can be divided into five types:

Parameter Meaning
-d Set ¡°socket¡± debugging function
-i Set that ECHO_REQUEST message is sent to the directly -connected network through ping without routing
-q Except statistics, other detailed information is not displayed
-s Set the length of ECHO_REQUEST message
-t Set the time-out time of waiting for the response of ECHO_REQUEST message
-v Display the received non ECHO_RESPONSE ICMP messages. It is not displayed by default.
6.8.2 Tracert
In user mode, you can use tracert to test the gateways through which data packet is sent from the host to destination.
It is mainly used to check whether the network connection is reachable, and analyze where a fault occurs in the network.
The format of the command is tracert hostip/name, between which there can be one or multiple parameters, which are shown in Table 6-5.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
6-42
Table 6-5 Parameters of the tracert command
Parameter Meaning
-f Set the minimum value of TTL
-m Set the maximum value of TTL
-w Set time-out time
The procedure of using tracert is: first send a data packet with TTL as 1. Therefore, an ICMP error message is returned for the first hop to indicate that the data packet cannot be sent (since TTL is timed out), after that, the data packet is resent, with TTL as 2. Similarly, TTL timeout is returned for the second hop.
The procedure is carried on constantly until reaching the destination.
The purpose of carrying out these procedures is to record the source address of each ICMP TTL timeout message, so as to provide the path through which an IP data packet reaches the destination.

Chapter 7 Troubleshooting
This chapter includes two parts:
l It introduces common means of locating faults so that you can master simple fault-locating methods
l It then gives some examples on faults of the IAD for your reference.
7.1 Common Fault-locating Means
7.1.1 Showing Important System Information
I. Showing version
Obtaining the software version of the IAD is the basis of locating its faults.
If the software is not the latest version, some of its problems may have been solved in a subsequent version. In this case, you can locate some problems from the version number and get corresponding solutions.
By using display version in the user mode, you can query the software and hardware version of the IAD.

7.1.2 Showing Alarms
Alarm information is part of the history records on device operation.
By analyzing alarm information, you can predict problems that may arise in the running of the device.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
7-6
Note that when the IAD is powered off and restarted, the alarm records saved before will be lost.
You can use display alarm list to show all alarms.
For other commands to show alarms, refer to 5.4 Alarm Management.
During the running of the IAD, pay attention to the following alarms.
I. System start alarm
This alarm tells you the system start time and whether the system was reset while it was running.
The following is an example.
ALARM 4 INFO MAJOR 0x00000336 —— 2004-08-18 09:37:34
ALARM NAME : device start
PARAS INFO : device start
DESCRIPTION : device start

II. Interface interruption/recovery alarm
Interface interruption is generally caused by network conditions.
When interface interruption occurs, no phone calls can be made. If you hear busy tone or no tone after off-hook, you need to first check if there is an interface interruption alarm.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
7-7
If multiple IAD devices in the same area generate interface interruption alarms almost at the same time, the problem is usually caused by the bearer network.
It is normal that each system startup is accompanied by an interface recovery alarm.
The following is an example.

7.2 Common Troubleshooting
I. The PWR indicator is off.
l Use the dedicated power adapter and ensure the input voltage of the power adapter is proper.
l If the power adapter is proper and works normally, the cause lies in the IAD. In this case, change the IAD.
II. The Ethernet port cannot work.
l Check WAN or LAN indicators. If they are on, check software configuration of the device. If they are off, check network port connections.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
7-9
l Use straight through network cables in good condition. If the LAN indicator is off, the hardware is damaged. Contact the distributor. If the LAN indicator is on, the hardware is normal. In this case, check other connecting devices.
l Ensure the WAN port is connecting to an upstream device and the LAN port is connecting to a downstream device, such as a computer.
III. The phone connecting to the PHONE port does not work normally.
l Check the PHONE indicator. In the following cases, the IAD works normally. On: offhook; off: onhook; blinking: ringing
l If the IAD works normally, the cause lies in hardware. In this case, change the IAD.

8.2.5 Configure RFC2833
The command is used to configure RFC2833 mode that is used by IAD to transmit dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) and the encryption key of the transmission.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
8-20
When RFC2833 mode is used to transmit DTMF number, the important information such as card number and password is transmitted.
Therefore, if the plain text is used for transmission, the content is easy to steal and the mode is not reliable.
To ensure the DTMF number can be securely transmitted over IP network in RFC2833 mode, RFC messages need to be encrypted. The encryption key and whether the messages are encrypted is configured on IAD.
Use the following command to configure RFC2833 functions.
Command Remarks
TERMINAL(advanced-config)#sip send-capability 2833 [ 2833-hnc1 <on | off> | hnc1-key string ]
2833-hnc1: The default is off.
string: The encryption key of 2833 messages. The value range is 1 – 16 characters.

8.3 Configuring Parameters of LAN Switch
The IAD provides two Ethernet ports:
l One WAN port, used as an upstream port l One LAN port, used to access data subscribers
I. Configuring Tag
The IAD inserts 802.1p1q tags to data packets sent by its WAN and LAN ports. That is, four bytes are inserted behind source MAC addresses in data packet headers. These bytes include VID and Priority.
Table 8-4lists commands used to configure tags.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
8-24
Table 8-4 Configuring tags
To… Use… Remarks
Configure a tag.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#tag interface { lan | voice } vlanid id [ priority priority ]
id: VALN ID
priority: precedence
Delete the tag. undo tag interface { lan | voice } —
Show tag information.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#display interface —
In general, the CPU generates voice packets upstream, while data packets are forwarded from the LAN port to the WAN port.
The command Tag is used to insert tags to data and voice packets. Upstream devices can distinguish data packets and voice packets according to tags and forward them according to priority.
In general, priority of voice packets is higher than that of data packets.
In NAT mode, data packets forwarded from the LAN port to the WAN port must be forwarded by the CPU. Thus, these data packets are inserted tags which are the same as those of voice packets.
In non-NAT mode, data packets are inserted tags which are different from those of voice packets.
Because Tag is used to insert tags to upstream data packets, you need not configure the WAN port.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
8-25
Example 1:
Insert tags into data packets received by the LAN port and sent from the WAN port.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#tag interface lan vlanid 200 priority 1
After configuration, data packets received by the LAN port are inserted tags. VID = 200; priority = 1.
To cancel configuration, do as follows:
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#undo tag interface lan
Example 2:
In NAT mode, all data packets upstream pass the CPU. Insert tags into these data packets.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#tag interface voice vlanid 300
priority 6
After configuration, data packets sent from the WAN port are inserted tags. VID = 300; priority = 6.
Example 3:
Insert tags into data packets generated by the CPU and sent from the WAN port.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#tag interface voice vlanid 100
priority 7
After configuration, data packets generated by the CPU and sent from the WAN port are inserted tags. VID = 100; priority = 7.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
8-26
To cancel configuration, do as follows:
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#undo tag interface voice
After configuration, all data packets generated by the CPU and sent from the WAN port are not inserted tags.
II. Enabling/Disabling an Ethernet Port
You can use the following commands to enable or disable an Ethernet port.
To… Use… Remarks
Disable an Ethernet port.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#shutdown {wan | lan}
wan: upstream network port
lan: downstream network port
Enable an Ethernet port.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#undo shutdown {wan | lan} —
Example:
Disable and enable a WAN port.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#shutdown wan
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#undo shutdown wan

III. Setting Duplex Status of Ports
l Full-duplex: The port can send and receive data at the same time.
l Half-duplex: Data packets are transmitted in only one direction at a time.
l Automatic mode: The sender and the receiver negotiates duplex mode.
Table 8-5lists the command used to configure the working mode of ports.
Table 8-5 Configuring working mode of ports
To… Use… Remarks
Configure duplex status.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#duplex {half | full | auto } {wan | lan}
half | full: half/full duplex status
By default, it is in full-duplex state.
auto: auto-negotiation status
Example:
Configure a WAN port to work in auto-negotiation mode.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#duplex auto wan

IV. Configuring Port Rate
When the port works in auto-negotiation mode, the rate is negotiated by this port and the opposite port.
Command:
To… Use… Remarks
Show global configuration parameters.
TERMINAL(lanswitch)#speed {10 | 100 | auto} {wan | lan}
10 | 100 | auto: network port rate
By default, it is 10 Mbit/s.
Example:
Set the rate of No. 1 port to be 100 Mbit/s.
