UNO Flip is a super fun variation of UNO you can play with up to 9 of your friends. Every card has two playable sides, each one with different numbers and actions. UNO Flip is super easy to learn and a blast to play. Keep reading to learn how to set up the game and get started!

  1. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 1

    1

Choose a dealer by cutting the cards. Shuffle the cards and put the stack in the middle of the table so the Light Side of the cards (the side with the white border) is face-down. Then, every player draws a card and reveals the Light Side. Whoever has the highest number starts as the dealer for the first round.[1]

    • If anyone draws an action card without a number, it counts as a 0.
  2. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 2

    2

Deal 7 cards to each player. Whoever is the dealer shuffles all the cards again with the Light Side face-down. After they finish dealing, set the stack of cards in the middle of the table with the Dark Side face-up to make the draw pile. Everyone can look at their hand, but keep the Light Side of the cards hidden from the other players.[2]

    3

Start the discard pile on the Light Side with the top card of the draw pile. Flip over the top card of the draw pile to reveal the Light Side. The game will always start on the Light Sides of the cards. The player to the left of the dealer takes the first turn.[3]

    • If you reveal a Wild card when you flip the top card over, then the player to your left gets to choose the starting color.

Play a card with the same number, color, or symbol as the top discarded card. Take your turns starting in clockwise order. Look at the top card in the discard pile and check your hand to see if you have a card you can play. If you have a card with a matching number, color, or symbol, you can play it onto the discard pile for your turn. You can only play one card per turn.[4]

    • On the Light Side, the colors are blue, green, red, and yellow. On the Dark Side, the colors are pink, teal, orange, and purple. The numbers on the cards range from 1 to 9 in each color.
    • You can play a Wild card no matter what the top card of the discard pile is.
    • Always try to play a card from your hand if you can since you earn points for playing all of your cards.
  2. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 5

    2

Draw a card if you’re not able to play a card from your hand. Take the top card of the draw deck and add it to your hand so it shows the same side as the rest of your cards. If the card you just drew matches the color, value, or symbol of the top card in the discard, you can play it immediately. Otherwise, your turn ends immediately.[5]

    • If the draw deck runs out of cards during a round, just shuffle the discard pile to make a new draw pile.
  3. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 6

    3

Say “UNO!” when you only have 1 card left in your hand. Say it loudly as soon as you play your second-to-last card so the other players know you’re about to go out.[6]

    • If you forget to say “UNO!” before the next player starts their turn, another player can catch you by saying something like, “You forgot to say UNO!” If you get caught, you have to draw 2 cards from the top of the deck right away.
  4. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 7

    4

Finish and score the round when someone plays their last card. After someone plays the last card, everyone reveals the cards they have left in their hands. The player who went out gets points for every card other players still had, but the point value varies depending on the card.[7]

    • Cards with the numbers 1–9 are worth their face value in points.
    • Draw One: 10 points.
    • Draw Five: 20 points.
    • Reverse: 20 points.
    • Skip: 20 points.
    • Flip: 20 points.
    • Skip Everyone: 30 points.
    • Wild: 40 points.
    • Wild Draw Two: 50 points.
    • Wild Draw Color: 60 points.
  5. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 8

    5

Keep playing rounds until someone scores 500 points. If a player hasn’t reached 500 points yet, shuffle all of the cards and deal a new hand to each player. At the end of each round, add any points you earned to your previous total. Whoever crosses 500 points first, wins![8]

    • Fun variation: Instead of awarding points to the first player out each round, players add the points left in their hand after each round to their score. Once a player reaches 500 points, the player with the least amount of points wins.

Flip. Flip Cards have a card icon with an arrow on them. As soon as you play the card, the cards switch from the Light Side to the Dark Side, or vice-versa. Flip the entire discard pile over so the card you just played is on the bottom of the stack. Then, flip over the draw pile to the other side. Finally, flip your cards so you’re looking at the same side that’s showing in the discard pile.[9]

    • If this is the first Flip card played in the game, you’ll change from the Light Side to the Dark Side.
    • There are 2 Flip cards of each color in both the Light Side and Dark Side of the deck.
    • Dark Side action cards are more powerful than Light Side actions.
  2. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 10

    2

Draw One. Cards with “+1” on them force the next player to take 1 card from the top of the draw pile and add it to their hand. That player also loses their turn, so the player after them will go next.[10]

    • There are 2 Draw One cards of each color in the Light Side of the deck.
    • If you flip this card as the first card of the game, the first player draws a card and misses their turn.
  3. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 11

    3

Draw Five. Draw Five cards have “+5” written on them. The next player after you has to draw 5 cards from the top of the deck into their hand and they lose their turn.[11]

    • There are 2 Draw Five cards of each color in the Dark Side of the deck.
  4. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 12

    4

Skip. Skip cards have a circle with a line through them as their symbol. As soon as you play a Skip card, the next player loses their turn and you skip over them.[12]

    • There are 2 Skip cards of each color in the Light Side of the deck.
  5. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 13

    5

Skip Everyone. Skip Everyone has a circular arrow symbol. Rather than only skipping the next player after you, you get to skip all of the players at the table and take a second turn.[13]

    • There are 2 Skip Everyone cards of each color in the Dark Side of the deck.
  6. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 14

    6

Reverse. Reverse cards have arrows pointing to opposite sides and they make the direction of turn order change. If it’s the first time you play a Reverse card in a game, then you switch from going clockwise around the table to counter-clockwise, so the player to your right will take the next turn.[14]

    • There are 2 Reverse cards of each color in both the Light Side and Dark Side.
    • If you reveal a Reverse card as the first card at the start of the game, then the dealer plays first and continues counter-clockwise around the table.
  7. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 15

    7

Wild. Wild cards show the 4 colors of the side you’re currently playing. You can play a Wild card on your turn no matter what the card in the discard pile is. Choose a color on the side that you’re currently playing. The next player will have to play a card of that color.[15]

    • There are 4 Wild cards each in the Light Side and Dark Side.
  8. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 16

    8

Wild Draw Two. Wild Draw Two cards look like a Wild card with “+2” written on it. You can only play a Wild Draw Two card if you don’t have any other cards in your hand that match the color of the discarded card. You can choose the next color that needs to be played and the next player after you has to draw 2 cards. They also lose their turn.[16]

    • There are 4 Wild Draw Two cards in the Light Side of the deck.
    • If another player thinks you have another card in your hand that you were able to play, they can challenge you to reveal your hand. If you had another card you could have played, then you have to draw 2 cards instead. If the person was wrong, they draw 4 cards as a penalty.
  9. Image titled Play Uno Flip Step 17

    9

Wild Draw Color. The Wild Draw Color looks like a wild card with a deck symbol on it. You can only play this card if you don’t have another card in your hand that matches the color of the discarded card. After you play this card, choose a color and the next player has to draw cards from the deck until they get a card of that color.[17]

    • There are 4 Wild Draw Color cards in the Dark Side of the deck.
    • If someone thinks you had a card of the same color as the discard, they can challenge you to reveal your hand. If you get caught, then you have to draw cards until you get one of the color you chose. If the person challenging you was wrong, they take the penalty and draw 2 additional cards.

uno flip game rulesUno Flip is a fun version of Uno that deserves some serious attention. It is very similar to classical Uno, but with a light and dark version of itself along with different action cards. Unlike the typical Uno card game where you only play with one side while the card back is just decorative art, in Uno Flip you have to use both sides of the cards. If you love Uno, it’s likely you will like Uno Flip too.

Ready to try Uno Flip? Let’s dive into the Uno Flip rules!

Contents of Each Deck

There are altogether 112 cards in each deck of Uno Flip, and 2-10 players may take part in a game. The objective of the game is the same as all the Uno games, which is to get rid of all your cards before the others do, and scoring 500+ points from counting the cards left in their hands.

The Light Side consists of typical blue/green/yellow/red cards and slightly different Action cards from the regular Uno, in the form of a Draw One card (instead of the typical Draw Two) and Wild Draw Two cards (instead of Wild Draw Four). There are also Flip cards in each of the 4 colors to execute and trigger flipping over to the other side.

The Dark Side consists of pink/teal/purple/orange cards and Draw Five cards, Wild Draw Color cards, and Flip cards to execute flipping. Yes you read that right, the Draw Five cards means one will have to draw 5 cards!

Starting Up

Always make sure ALL the cards are always facing one way, whether it be the Dark or Light Side, depending on what side is in play at the moment; however gameplay always begins on the Light Side. Choose a dealer by having everyone draw a card from the deck. Looking at the Light Side, the player with the highest number (Action cards count as zero) becomes the dealer.

The dealer then shuffles the deck and deals out 7 cards to each player. Since gameplay begins with the Light Side, hold the cards with the Light Side facing you, while the outer Dark Side faces everyone else.

The deck is then placed down with the Light Side facing down (unseen), while the Dark Side faces up. This is the Draw pile. The top card on the Draw pile is then turned up and placed down to form a separate Discard pile. Obviously, this first card will have its Light side facing up so everyone can see what it is.

Gameplay

The player to the left of the dealer usually begins first, and play goes in a clockwise direction until changed by a Reverse card. Begin by matching the topmost card on the Discard pile with number, color, or symbol (Action cards) according to the side it is on (Light or Dark side).

If the topmost card is a green 5 (Light side), then you can put down a green card, or a number 5 card of any color (it must be a Light side card as well). If the Discard pile card is a purple 3 (Dark side), then you can put down any purple card, or number 3 card (provided they are all on the Dark side as well).

You can also play an Action card that is appropriate (refer to the Action cards section below) but remember, it needs to be an Action card of either Light or Dark side, depending on what side the Discard pile card is on at that particular moment.

If you have no suitable card to play, then you must draw a card from the Draw pile. If the card can be played, then you can choose to play it. If the card cannot be played, then your turn is over, and it’s the next player’s turn. Do note you can choose NOT to play any card even if you do have a suitable matching card.

Action Cards in Uno Flip

Uno Flip has a number of Action cards that are unique to itself. Let us take a look at them for both sides, starting with the Light Side.

Light Side

uno flip light side action cards

Uno Flip Light Side Action cards from left to right: Wild, Wild Draw Two, Draw One, Flip, Reverse, and Skip.

Draw One

Once played, the next player needs to draw one card from the Draw pile and skip their turn. You can only play this card if it’s the same color as the Discard pile card, or on another Draw One card of any color on it. Note: This refers to another Draw One card played by a player whose turn came before you and does not imply stacking – you are not allowed to stack cards in Uno. If turned up as the first card when the game begins, the first player (on the dealer’s left) must draw a card and skip their turn.

Skip

When played, the next player must skip their turn. This card can only be played on top of a same-color card or another Skip card of any color (put down by an earlier player). If this is the first card turned up to start the game, the first player must skip their turn, and the next player (to his/her left) goes instead.

Reverse

This card turns the direction of play to the opposite direction. You can only play this card on a matching color card, or on another Reverse card. If this is the first card turned up at the start of the game, the first player on the dealer’s left (who is supposed to go first) is skipped and the dealer goes first instead, followed by the player to his/her right. The direction of play also begins counter-clockwise (instead of the usual clockwise direction).

Wild card

This card enables the player who plays it to choose what color they want to continue play. You can play this card even if you have other playable cards (that matches the card on top of the Discard pile), because the Wild card can represent ANY color. If turned up at the start of play, the first player gets to choose what color to continue play.

Wild Draw Two

Although a Wild card, but this card also forces the next player to draw 2 cards from the Draw pile and skip their turn. Unlike the normal Wild card that can be played with or without any matching color cards, you should only play this when you do NOT have any suitable matching color cards.

If the next player suspects you played this card “illegally”, they are entitled to challenge you to show your hand to him/her. If it’s proven that you do have matching color cards in your hand and thus played that Wild Draw Two illegally, you must draw 2 cards instead of the challenger. But if proven innocent (and you indeed have no matching color cards), the challenger must draw 4 cards instead!

Flip card

This card can only be played on top of a matching color card or another Flip card. When you play the Flip card while the game is on the Light Side, all the cards must be flipped over to the Dark Side. This includes the Discard pile (the topmost Flip card that was just played now goes to the bottom), the Draw pile, and everyone’s cards in their hands (now everyone must turn the Dark Side to face themselves while the Light Side faces the opponents).

Like the Reverse card, this new side remains in play until changed over by a new Flip card being played. If turned up at the start of play, everything must flip and the first player must now match that Flip card with a matching color card (or another Flip)!

Dark Side

Note that the Dark Side cards should never start off the game (only the Light Side), so you should not ever have to wonder about turning up an Action card from the Dark Side as the first card to begin a game/round.

uno flip dark side action cards

Uno Flip Dark Side Action cards from left to right: Wild, Wild Draw Color, Draw Five, Flip, Reverse, and Skip Everyone.

Draw Five

When this card is played, the next player must draw 5 cards from the Draw pile and skip their turn. Whoa, 5 cards may seem like a lot to some! You can only play this card on a similarly colored card or on another Draw Five card lying on the Discard pile.

Skip Everyone

This Skip is slightly different from the Light Side Skip card. When played, ALL other players are skipped, and the player who played it effectively gets another turn again. You can only play this card on another card of the same color or on another Skip Everyone (of any color).

Reverse

This card changes the direction of play, from clockwise to anti-clockwise, and vice-versa. You can only play this card on a card of the same color, or on another Reverse of any color.

Wild card

Playing this color allows you to choose ANY color you want in order to continue play. This means you can also choose to maintain the color that is currently in play. Also, you can play this card even though you have other suitable cards in hand.

Wild Draw Color card

This card is dreadful. When you play this card, specify the color you want, and the next player has to draw cards until they get a card with the color of your choice (and miss their turn). It doesn’t matter how many cards they need to draw as long as they draw a card with your chosen color!

But just like the Wild Draw Two card from the Light Side, you can only play this card if you don’t have any card in hand that matches the color of the topmost card on the Discard pile. You can still play this card anyway, but the next player is also allowed to challenge you to show your hand and prove you played the Wild Draw Color card legally. If guilty, you have to draw cards instead, until you get the chosen color. But if innocent, the challenger has to draw cards until they get the chosen color PLUS 2 more cards!

Flip card

The Dark Side Flip card works in the same way as the Light Side Flip card (see above). When played by someone, ALL the cards have to be flipped over from the Dark Side to the Light Side. This includes the Draw pile, Discard pile, and everyone’s cards in their hands. The Flip card can only be played on a card of the same color or another Flip card, and once changed, the new side remains in play until a new Flip card is played.

Going Out

As always, remember to yell “Uno” aloud when you are playing your second-last card. The purpose is to inform others that you’re going to win the round. If you forget to announce “Uno” before the next player has played a card and someone catches you for it, you need to draw 2 cards from the Draw pile.

The winner of the round is the first person to get rid of all their cards. Note that if your last card is a Draw One, Draw Five, Wild Draw Two or Wild Draw Color, the next player also needs to draw cards as instructed by those cards. These cards will still count towards the final score of the winner of the round.

If the Draw pile gets depleted and no one has yet won the round, shuffle the Discard pile and turn it into a new Draw pile.

uno flip cards

Scoring and Winning

Points are gained by the winner of the round from adding the points of all the cards left in their opponent’s hands. The points gained are as follows and they should only follow the side that the game ended on. For example, do not count any Draw Ones if the game ended on the Dark Side, as Draw One cards are from the Light Side.

  • Numbered cards (0-9) – Face value
  • Draw One – 10 points
  • Draw Five/Reverse/Skip/Flip – 20 points each
  • Skip Everyone – 30 points
  • Wild – 40 points
  • Wild Draw Two – 50 points
  • Wild Draw Color – 60 points

The winner is the first player to achieve 500 or more points, although you can certainly set a lower or higher point threshold depending on how many rounds you would like to play.

Alternative Gameplay

Another way to play Uno as proposed by Mattel, is to keep a running tally of the points from each player at the end of each round. When someone reaches 500 points, the player with the lowest points is declared the winner instead.

Uno Flip.

Uno Flip?

Uno Flip?

Uno.

Карты действий для легкой стороны включают в себя карты «Draw One» вместо «Draw Two», а также карты «Wild Draw Two» вместо «Wild Draw Four».

Uno Flip

  • Wild Draw Two стоит 50 очков.
  • Wild Draw Color — 60

Uno Flip?

Uno Flip —

UNO Flip»

UNO FLIP plays like regular UNO, except there are two sides to the deck of cards: a «light» side and a «dark» side.

You start playing with the Light Side, but whenever someone plays a FLIP card, the deck is flipped over (as are the cards in your hand) and now everyone must play off of the Dark Side of the cards.

The Dark Side has different Action Cards with much stiffer penalties. Player’s must play with the Dark Side cards until someone else plays another FLIP card, and then play goes back to the Light Side, and so on until someone has played all the cards in their hand, ending the round.

As always, if you are the first player to get rid of all of your cards in a round, you score points for the cards your opponents are left holding. Points in rounds accumulate and the first player to reach 500 points wins.

Note: Remember to score points based on which side (light or dark) the game ended on.

Components

Light Side (white Border):

  • 18 Blue cards — 1 to 9
  • 18 Green cards — 1 to 9
  • 18 Red cards — 1 to 9
  • 18 Yellow cards — 1 to 9
  • 8 Draw One cards
  • 8 Reverse cards
  • 8 Skip cards
  • 8 Flip
  • 4 Wild cards
  • 4 Wild Draw Two cards
Dark Side (black Border):
  • 18 Pink cards — 1 to 9
  • 18 Teal cards — 1 to 9
  • 18 Orange cards — 1 to 9
  • 18 Purple cards — 1 to 9
  • 8 Draw Five cards
  • 8 Reverse cards
  • 8 Skip Everyone cards
  • 8 Flip
  • 4 Wild cards
  • 4 Wild Draw Color cards

Setup

  1. Since the deck is two-sided, make sure all the cards of each side are facing the same way: all the Light Side cards facing one way, all the Dark Side cards facing the other way.

  2. Each player draws a card and then reveals the Light Side; the player that draws the highest number is the dealer (count any card with a symbol as zero).

  3. The dealer shuffles and deals each player 7 cards. Hold the cards with the Light Side facing you and the Dark Side facing your opponents.

  4. Place the remainder of the deck with the Light Side facedown to form a draw pile (the Dark Side cards will be facing UP).

  5. The top card of the DRAW pile is turned over to begin a discard pile (the Light Side cards will be facing UP).

Game Play

The person to the left of the dealer starts play.

Whether playing the Light Side or the Dark Side, on your turn, you must match a card from your hand to the card on the top of the DISCARD pile, either by number, color or symbol (symbols represent Action Cards).

If you don’t have a card that matches the one on the DISCARD pile, you must take a card from the DRAW pile.

Note: When adding cards to your hand, make sure they are facing the same direction as the other cards in your hand.

For example, if you are currently playing the Light Side, add new cards to your hand with the Light Side facing you.

If the card you picked up can be played, you are free to put it down in the same turn. Otherwise, play moves on to the next person in turn.

You may also choose NOT to play a playable card from your hand. If so, you must draw a card from the DRAW pile. If playable, that card can be put down in the same turn, however you may not play any other card from your hand after the draw.

Action Cards

Light Side

Draw One Card

When you play this card, the next player must draw one card and miss their turn.

This card may only be played on a matching color or on another Draw One card. If turned up at the beginning of play, the same rule applies.

Reverse Card

When you play this card, the direction of play reverses (if play is currently to the left, then play changes to the right, and vice versa).

This card may only be played on a matching color or on another Reverse card.

If this card is turned up at the beginning of play, the dealer goes first, then play moves to the right instead of the left.

Skip Card

When you play this card, the next player is «skipped» (loses their turn). This card may only be played on a matching color or on another Skip card.

If a Skip card is turned up at the beginning of play, the player to the left of the dealer is «skipped», hence the player to the left of that player starts play.

Wild Card

When you play this card, you get to choose the color that continues play (any color including the color in play before the Wild card was laid down).

You may play a Wild card on your turn even if you have another playable card in your hand.

If a Wild card is turned up at the beginning of play, the person to the left of the dealer chooses the color that continues play.

Wild Draw 2 Card

When you play this card, you get to choose the color that continues play PLUS the next player must draw two cards from the DRAW pile and lose their turn.

However, there is a hitch! You may only play this card when you do NOT have another card in your hand that matches the COLOR on the DISCARD pile (but it is acceptable to play this card if you have matching number or Action Cards).

If turned up at the beginning of play, return this card to the deck and pick another card.

Note: If you suspect that a Wild Draw 2 card has been played on you illegally (i.e. the player has a matching card), then you may challenge that player.

The challenged player must show you (the challenger) their hand. If guilty, the challenged player must draw the 2 cards instead of you. However, if the challenged player is innocent, you must draw the 2 cards PLUS an additional 2 cards (4 total)!

Flip Card

When you play this card, everything flips from the Light Side to the Dark Side. Once the Flip card has been played, flip over the Discard Pile (the card just played will now be on the bottom), then the Draw Pile, then everyone’s hands must flip to the other side.

This new side will remain in play until another Flip card is played, changing it again. This card may only be played on a matching color or on another Flip card.

Dark Side

Draw Five Card

When you play this card, the next player must draw five cards and miss their turn.

This card may only be played on a matching color or on another Draw Five card.

Reverse Card

When you play this card, the direction of play reverses (if play is currently to the left, then play changes to the right, and vice versa).

This card may only be played on a matching color or on another Reverse card.

Skip Everyone Card

When you play this card, all players are «skipped» (loses their turn). Play then returns to whoever laid down the card.

This card may only be played on a matching color or on another Skip Everyone card.

Wild Card

When you play this card, you get to choose the color that continues play (any color including the color in play before the Wild card was laid down).

You may play a Wild card on your turn even if you have another playable card in your hand.

Wild Draw Color Card

When you play this card, the next player must draw until they get a color of your choosing (no matter how many cards they have to draw to do so) and lose their turn. However, there is a hitch!

You may only play this card when you do NOT have another card in your hand that matches the COLOR on the DISCARD pile (but it is acceptable to play this card if you have matching number or Action Cards).

Note: If you suspect that a Wild Draw Color card has been played on you illegally (i.e. the player has a matching card), then you may challenge that player.

The challenged player must show you (the challenger) their hand. If guilty, the challenged player must draw the cards until they get the chosen color instead of you. However, if the challenged player is innocent, you must draw the cards until you get the chosen color PLUS an additional 2 cards!

Flip Card

When you play this card, everything flips from the Dark Side to the Light Side.

Going Out

Whether you are playing with the Light Side or the Dark Side, when you play your next-to-last card, you must yell «UNO» (meaning «one») to indicate that you have only one card left. If you don’t yell «UNO» and you are caught before the next player begins their turn, you must draw two cards.

Once a player has no cards left, the round is over. Points are scoredand play starts over again.

If the last card played in a round is a Draw One, Draw Five, Wild Draw Two or Wild Draw Color card, the next player must draw the one, five, two or until they get a chosen color card respectively. These cards are counted when the points are totaled.

If no player is out of cards by the time the DRAW pile is depleted, the DISCARD pile is reshuffled and play continues.

Scoring

The first player to get rid of their cards in a round receives points for all of the cards left in their opponents’ hands as follows:

  • All number cards (1-9): Face Value
  • Draw One: 10 Points
  • Draw Five: 20 Points
  • Reverse: 20 Points
  • Skip: 20 Points
  • Skip Everyone: 30 Points
  • Flip: 20 Points
  • Wild: 40 Points
  • Wild Draw Two: 50 Points
  • Wild Draw Color: 60 Points

Once the score for the round has been tallied, if no player has reached 500 points, reshuffle the cards and begin a new round.

Note: Remember to score points based on which side (light or dark) the game ended on.

End of the Game

The winner is the first player to reach 500 points.
